On November 1, China’s Scientific Papers Statistical Results Press Conference was held by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC). Xiangya Hospital has steadily ascended in each index of research papers and ranks the 3rd in the number of outstanding international papers (international papers with outstanding performance) and international co-authored papers with Xiangya staff as the first author, the 4th in the number of papers included in the Medline database and the 5th in the number of papers included in the SCIE database among all medical institutions in China.

It is worth noting that the ISTIC released the first Report on Innovative Development of Research Institutions in 2018, in which Xiangya Hospital ranks the 3rd in medical disciplines and life science of research and teaching collaboration and integration index among all medical institutions in China. Since 2018, the ISTIC evaluates and releases the Research and Teaching Collaboration and Integration Index of Chinese Medical Institutions. The index integrates the elements of research and talent development into scientific and technological innovation capability evaluation system and sets up nine indexes -- the number of approved projects, the funds of approved projects, the number of published papers, the number of patents for invention, the citing frequency of paper , the citing frequency of patent, the number of active R&D staff, the intensity of international cooperation, and the width of international cooperation on the basis of innovation input and output, academic influence, and talent development from the disciplinary perspective to evaluate each medical institution’s research and teaching collaboration and integration index by marking it with these indexes.

According to the data released, in 2017, Xiangya faculty and staff published a total of 626 papers in SCI journals, which was an increase of 56 over the last year and ranked the 5th among all medical institutions in China; the number of outstanding international papers (international papers with outstanding performance) was 305, an increase of 52 over 2016 and ranked the 3rd among all medical institutions in China (the 4th in 2016); the number of international co-authored papers with Xiangya staff as the first author was 113, an increase of 5 over 2016, and ranked the 3rd among all medical institutions in China (the 4th in 2016); and the number of papers included in Medline database was ranked the 4th among all medical institutions in China. The data prove that Xiangya Hospital has progressed in the number and the quality of scientific papers.

In recent years, according to the country’s and the university’s overall strategic deployment for the "Double First-Rate" Initiative and the core objective of building the world’s first-class clinical medicine discipline, the hospital’s Party and executive team leads all faculty and staff to make joint effort to continue developing a high-level research hospital that is top-ranking in China and renowned in the world and further improve the hospital’s scientific innovation system. The hospital has made major breakthroughs in research, published more than 600 SCI papers, won the second prize of the National Award for Progress in Science and Technology once and been approved to establish the International Joint Research Center for Medical Metabonomics and to carry out more than 100 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for 2 consecutive years. In 2018, it obtained 1 key project, 1 key international cooperation project, and 1 project for excellent young scholars of NSFC and 4 key projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC.

To build the world-class hospital and disciplines with its own characteristics, the hospital will further enhance disciplinary construction, increase key research outputs, boost the clinical application of medical research findings and improve its comprehensive strength.
