Hunan has been sending medical teams to Sierra Leone since 1973 and to Zimbabwe since 1985. During the past 45 years, Hunan has dispatched a total of 36 batches, 439 person-times of medical professionals to these two countries, providing quality medical service to over 200,000 local people and having established deep friendship with them.

Dr. Zhang Xin, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University introduced the hospital that he represents and Xiangya’s work with Africa. It is learned that Xiangya Hospital has dispatched 39 experts to Africa since 1973, including 26 to Sierra Leone. Especially in 2014, Ebola virus disease swept through West Africa. In response to the call of the then National Health and Family Planning Commission of China, Xiangya Hospital, within 45 minutes, organized an international medical aid team which departed for Sierra Leone the next day. In 2015, Xiangya Hospital took the lead in organizing the 5th China (Hunan) Medical Team to fight against the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and won the battle with zero infection of medical staff and 100% cure, which received wide acclaim from the international community. A video made by Xiangya Hospital titled “For a mission across ten thousand miles; with boundless love for families and countries” was displayed on the Times Square in New York, USA. Entrusted by the National Health Commission of China, Xiangya Hospital of CSU will take the lead in upgrading the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital, aiming for the best comprehensive hospital in West Africa. At present, the 20th China (Hunan) Medical Team mainly consisted of Xiangya doctors are working in Sierra Leone, providing quality medical services for the local residents.

Dr. Ye Ke, member of the 18th batch of China Medical Team to Sierra Leone, Associate Professor of General Surgery at Xiangya Hospital, CSU told about the experience of himself and his colleagues when working in Africa.

President Bio noted in his address that China and Sierra Leone has a long-standing friendship and China has provided generous help for the economic and social development of Sierra Leone. He also said that, the people of Sierra Leone would never forget that it was the Chinese government and Chinese people who came to help us when we were at the most difficult time fighting against the Ebola epidemic. The people of Hunan province, in particular, has contributed immensely for the health care system in Sierra Leone, so I am really here in recognition of the sacrifice and the work that you have done and to encourage you to help us for the training because we want to have similar expertise so that we will be able to take care of our own challenges. With the Belt and Road Initiative, I hope that we can deepen our cooperation for a shared future and make new progress in the healthcare sector. Thank you!

In this year’s Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, President Xi announced that China will, on the basis of the ten cooperation plans already adopted, launch eight major initiatives in close collaboration with African countries in the future; and health care initiative is one the them. Dr. Chen Xiang said that Central South University and its affiliated Xiangya Hospital will further strengthen exchanges with African countries and deepen medical cooperation with Sierra Leone in the hope of bringing real benefits to the local people.
