At the beginning of 2022, Prof. Huang Xun of the Infection Control Center of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University was appointed as a member of the WHO Advisory Group on the Bacterial Priority Pathogen List (WHO AG BPPL). This year, the WHO AG BPPL has appointed 22 expert members all around the world.
Appointment to WHO Advisory Group on the Bacterial Priority Pathogen List
It is well known that antimicrobial resistance(AMR) has become a major challenge for global public health. In 2017, WHO developed the first bacterial priority pathogens list (BPPL) to guide and promote the R&D of new antibiotics. Based on the urgency of the need for new antibiotics, WHO has classified antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the priority list into three tiers: critical, high, and medium. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the critical category include Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii, Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, and Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. This category of antibiotic-resistant bacteria are highly pathogenic and have a high detection rate in hospitals. The BPPL has emerged as a tool for raising AMR awareness, informing infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship interventions.
It has been 5 years since the last release of the BPPL, due to new evidence-based information and disease burden data, the WHO is initiating the update of BPPL. The WHO AG BPPL is led by the One Health Research Priority-setting and Synergy (OPS) Group of the Antimicrobial Resistance Division of WHO. The mandate of the WHO AG BPPL member mainly entails independent scientific and technical advice, review, and analysis of scientific information for the revision and update of the BPPL, etc.
As the main department responsible for hospital-wide consultation of clinical non-communicable infectious diseases and for the guidance of clinical antibiotics administration, the number of consultations of the Infection Control Center of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University reached 6,680 person-years in 2021. As Director of the Infection Control Center, Prof. Huang Xun also carries out functions such as the Head of the Chinese Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System (CNISS), the Head of Antimicrobial Administration and Evaluation Base for Medical Institutions of the National Health Commission (Hunan), and the Head of the Antimicrobial Surveillance Network of Hunan. Prof. Huang Xun stated that, as a selected expert of the WHO AG BPPL, she would truly uphold an objective, scientific, and responsible attitude, perform duties objectively and impartially with a global perspective for the active contribution to BPPL revision and update.
