Collaborative Innovation Alliance for Neurodegenerative Diseases of National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases is Inaugurated

From December 16 to 17, the annual academic meeting of Collaborative Innovation Alliance for Neurodegenerative Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases was kicked off in Changsha. During the meeting, top-level domestic and foreign experts in neurodegenerative diseases made reports and exchanged their new ideas, new knowledge, new technologies and new methods regarding the diseases, which is of great academic value to attendees. At the meeting, Collaborative Innovation Alliance for Neurodegenerative Diseases was officially launched. Upholding the ideal of "collaborative innovation, sincere cooperation, sharing and win-win result", it aims to build a communication platform for researchers all over China.

The meeting was presided over by Prof. Jiang Hong, deputy director of Neurology Department of Xiangya Hospital, director of neurodegenerative diseases and genetic diseases and director of neurogenetic disease laboratory.

President Zhang Zhuohua said it was forecasted that senior Chinese aged 60 plus will reach 255 million by 2020, accounting for around 17.8% of total population, as the aging of population is accelerating. The morbidity of neurodegenerative diseases increases with age. While Chinese population is aging, the number of Chinese neurodegenerative diseases patients will gradually grow and the disease will become a critical issue that threatens the health of elder Chinese. 

Nevertheless, as neurodegenerative diseases feature imperceptible onset and complicated clinical symptoms, its pathological lesion has irrevocably deteriorated to middle and advanced stage by the time of clinical confirmation of diagnosis and missed the best timing for intervention so that the treatment is delayed in most cases. Therefore, it is of vital importance to tackle neurodegenerative diseases by means of early warning, early diagnosis, early intervention and precise treatment. The Alliance will develop innovative clinical diagnosis and treatment technologies for neurodegenerative diseases, benefit the clinical diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases by standardizing its process and promoting the training in relevant knowledge, share the clinical big data and biological specimen of the diseases, carry out collaborative innovative researches utilizing new technologies and new methods and realize multi-center promotion and application through "Internet+" so as to make "cooperation, sharing and win-win result" come true, improve grassroots diagnosis and treatment, serve the masses and boost the development of the discipline. 

The meeting inaugurated more than 20 collaborative innovation alliances that respectively focus on the molecular diagnosis and typing of Parkinson"s disease, Alzheimer"s disease and multiple system atrophy, neurodegenerative diseases and sleep disorder, geriatric diseases and smart health care, etc. With the collaborative innovation alliance of National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases of Xiangya Hospital as the core and the Collaborative Innovation Alliance for Neurodegenerative Diseases as the link, a cooperation and exchange platform will be established based on the ideal of "collaborative innovation, sincere cooperation, sharing and win-win result".  

As remarked by academician Zhou Honghao, geriatrics is the spotlight in the big health campaign since China initiated the concept of "health for all" and a key issue to be solved for the progress of "Healthy China" strategy and well-off society construction as it involves both senior population and mass health. He hopes that the alliance will be a stimulus for the construction and development of geriatrics and neurodegenerative diseases.
