On August 16, a delegation of seven people from Hong Kong University led by Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine visited Xiangya Hospital Central South University. The two parties had an in-depth discussion on the development of medical education in Hong Kong and mainland China and reached a preliminary intention of bilateral cooperation.

Participants from Hong Kong University include Professor Chan Ying-shing, Associate Dean (Development & Infrastructure), Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, Professor Lau Chak-sing, Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning), Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, Ms. Isabella Wong, Director of China Affairs, Ms. Jeannie Tsang, Faculty Secretary, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, Ms. Mary Fung, Senior Manager, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and Ms. Rachel Jie, Programme Manager, China Affairs Office. President Sun Hong, Vice President Zhang Guogang and directors of relevant departments of Xiangya Hospital were also present at the meeting, which was presided over by President Sun Hong.

During the meeting, President Sun Hong briefed the history and development of Xiangya Hospital, especially its medical education, scientific research and internationalization strategy. President Sun said that he hoped an institution-level cooperative relationship could be established between Xiangya Hospital and Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU, strengthening communication and exchanges among the medical students, clinical staff and administrative personnel of the two parties, as well as seeking for collaboration opportunities in scientific research.

Professor Leung said that Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine is committed to training students with international vision and knowledge about mainland China, and conducting medical research especially in medical big data. As Xiangya Hospital had a solid foundation for international cooperation, he hoped that both parties would strengthen collaboration in talent cultivation including students, residents and specialists, as well as scientific research.

In addition, Professor Leung and the delegation watched the profile video of Xiangya Hospital The Light of Xiangya with great interest. After the meeting, they visited the Red Building of Xiangya and Xiangya International Medical Center. Professor Leung and the delegation said that they were very impressed by the favorable environment, patient-centered services and high-end medical equipment of Xiangya Hospital.

It is reported that Xiangya Hospital has actively promoted its internationalization process and strengthened international exchanges. It has established an International Affairs Office and has adopted the "go global" and "bring in" strategies to deepen international exchanges and cooperation. A good example is its collaboration with UPMC in establishing the Xiangya International Medical Center. In 2016, Xiangya Hospital received a total of 113 batches of 342 visitors from 17 countries and regions for academic exchanges and executive visits.
