Prof. Ted has obtained more than 70 research project grants including 26 ones from NIH, totaling $ 76 million. He has published 545 papers in well-known journals such as Science, Nature and Cell. He was one of the five most cited neurologists in the world between 2002 and 2012, with an H index of 149. In addition, he holds 18 U.S. patents and is member of the editorial board of 29 authoritative journals. He has won the Royal Academy of Engineering International Medal, Geriatric Doctor Award, Thomson Reuters the Worlds Most Influential Scientific Minds, U.S News & World Report Top Doctor and many other awards and honors. Prof. Valina has obtained 11 research project grants, totaling $ 26 million and published 406 papers in well-known journals such as Science, Nature and Cell, with an H index of 126. In addition, she holds 8 U.S. patents and is member of the editorial board of 14 authoritative journals. She has won Danial Nathans Innovator Award, Thomson Reuters the Worlds Most Influential Scientific Minds, Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award and many other awards and honors.

Prof. Zhang Xin, Party Secretary of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, read and presented the letter of appointment to the two distinguished professors and issued the hospital badges to them. With two stories, he explained the close and long-standing relationship and connection between Xiangya Hospital and Johns Hopkins University. In 1915, William Welch, one of the founding professors and the first dean of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, travelled all the way from the United States to Hunan, China, to help Xiangya Hospital lay the cornerstone of “Xiangya Red Building”, and the founder of Xiangya Hospital, Dr. Edward Hume, also graduated from Johns Hopkins University. Prof. Zhang said that the close cooperative relationship between Xiangya and Johns Hopkins has been established since Xiangya Hospital was built more than 110 years ago. Over the past years, the research team in Xiangya Hospital, led by Prof. Tang Baisha, has made significant progress in the research on Parkingsons disease and neurodegenerative diseases. Since both Prof. Ted and Valina Dawson are internationally well-known experts in these areas, he believed the two professors joining Xiangya Hospital would not only promote the friendship between the two hospitals, but also significantly boost Xiangyas development in the field of neuroscience research so as to make more achievements.

Prof. Ted and Valina Dawson said that it was a great pleasure to contribute to the promotion of friendship between Xiangya Hospital and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Xiangyas research team has secured a leading position in the research on the genetic cloning of Parkinsons disease and neurodegenerative diseases. Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is well-known for the cellular and molecular research of nervous system diseases. They hoped that the cooperation between Xiangya Hospital and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine would create a win-win situation and lead to more achievements in both talent cultivation and scientific research.
